Flight Assembled Architecture Revisited, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao / Autostadt, Wolfsbzurg, 2021-2023
Inhabiting the Virtual
Flight Assembled Architecture, a six-hundred-meter-high pedestrian ideal city for 30’000 inhabitants, has been conceived by Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler as an interdisciplinary project with Raffaello D’Andrea in 2012. Its meta-structure would be erected, continuously reconfigured, and finally dismantled by autonomous flying drones. For the "Motion. Autos. Art. Architecture." exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao by the Norman Foster Foundation, Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich has updated the former project by populating the vertical city with autonomous virtual humans in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Siyu Tang, Computer Vision and Learning Group at ETH Zurich. In a juxtaposition between the real and the virtual, the audience of the exhibition witnesses virtual life within the city. Life unfolds in real-time thanks to computer-generated avatars. Each one of them has unique artificial intelligence and walks within the generated architectural environment with its own distinctive movements.

In 2023, the exhibition has traveled from Bilbao to the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. In the new FAA Revisited installation, specially designed for this new location, visitors experience life within the FAA tower in first person thanks to virtual reality. The public can walk within the FAA tower, while seeing the real-time generated avatars moving around through the fully rendered utopia.
