Software
roslibpy
Python ROS Bridge library allows to use Python and IronPython to interact with ROS, the open-source robotic middleware. It uses WebSockets to connect to rosbridge 2.0 and provides publishing, subscribing, service calls, actionlib, TF, and other essential ROS functionality. Unlike the rospy library, this does not require a local ROS environment, allowing usage from platforms other than Linux.

Mechanical/Robotics Engineer in Digital Construction (80-100%)
We are looking for a Mechanical or Robotics Engineer working on the research project Mesh Mould Prefabrication - an innovative digital design and robotic fabrication process for non-standard concrete elements, which investigates the unification of formwork and reinforcement. Your work will focus on the development and implementation of an automated fabrication process to feed, bend, cut and weld reinforcement steel to manufacture geometrically complex steel meshes. As such, you will be responsible for the mechanical and process engineering of the project, as well as support the machine design and product development. This multidisciplinary research project is conducted in collaboration with a major player in the construction industry and aims at implementing the Mesh Mould technology at an industrial scale. ETH Zürich, HIL F40.9, 14:00. Lecturer: Prof. Fabio Gramazio, David Jenny.
During this semester, the students will explore the architectural potentials of robotic extrusion of spatial mesh structures. Typically, structures are assembled from discrete elements, such as, for example, concrete beams or timber members. With the bespoke robotic fabrication process at hand, however, we will foster the potential of the continuous extrusion of filaments to design and fabricate spatially graded structures.

Extruded Structures - Architecture and Digital Fabrication intro lecture HS14
ETH Zürich, HIL F 40.9, 14h. Lecturer: Prof. Fabio Gramazio, Prof. Matthias Kohler, Norman Hack, Luka Piskorec.
During this semester, the students will explore the architectural potentials of robotic extrusion of spatial meshes. Traditionally, spatial architectural structures – such as, for example, space trusses – consist of discrete elements and custom connections, and are sequentially assembled. In Extruded Structures, however, we will foster the continuous extrusion of filaments in space to fabricate complex meshes with structural properties. As such, students will learn how to generate and articulate their spatially complex designs through scripting by using simple design and fabrication rules. Physical prototypes will be produced using lightweight robotic arms with custom built ABS filament extruders. There are no special programming skills required, but a proactive attitude towards digital-material experimentation and design curiosity. This elective is offered as a double course and the ECTS points are counted accordingly.

Throwing or shooting of material enables builders to reach locations before unreachable, it multiplies our ability to interact with space beyond our own physical limitations. With "Remote Material Deposition", we want to rethink the way in which these problems are addressed since archaic times. Instead of slowly constructing a building simultaneously with large number of actors, we enable a single machine to simultaneously work on different positions and tasks. During the semester the students will be working with the an experimental robotic setup with integrated scanning technology to facilitate the design to fabrication feedback loop, investigating the design potential of the set fabrication paradigm. There are no special programming skills required, but a proactive attitude towards experimentation and design curiosity from all students is expected. This elective is offered as an double-course and the ECTS points are counted accordingly.

The Robotic Touch – How Robots Change Architecture
Park Books.
„The Robotic Touch – How Robots Change Architecture“ introduces a radically new way of thinking about and materialising architecture. It is the first anthology on architectural design with robots and provides a selection of projects that have originated over almost a decade of research at ETH Zurich. Within that scope, the book not only outlines a digital building culture to come, it deliberately proposes that this culture be shaped by architects. The book is now out of print. Nevertheless, we have made a freely accessible E-book out of it. Download the E-book here.

Surface Modulations - DFAB Intro lecture HS13
ETH Zürich, HIL F 40.9, 14h. Lecturer: Prof. Fabio Gramazio, Luka Piskorec.
Throughout the semester we will explore the robotic assembly of acoustically performative surfaces. Additive material processes provide an alternative to CNC milling in the design and fabrication of acoustic surfaces , allowing the systematized control and manipulation of acoustic and aesthetic properties. Starting with strategies for aggregating a generic unit into modules, the students will iterate designs through a production workflow utilizing small scale industrial robot arms. The projects, investigated in teams, will develop through the production of building scaled prototypes to enable deeper evaluation and comparison. There are no special programming skills required, but a proactive attitude towards experimentation and design curiosity from all students is expected. This elective is offered as an double-course and the ECTS points are counted accordingly.

The theme of this semester’s course is the design of spatial structures using timber beam elements. We want to reinterpret traditional and contemporary timber systems using digital tools. The digital production technology and the resulting opportunities and constraints form the basis for the design. In the center of the course is the rule-based description of structural systems through programming and the production in a model scale by a robotic manufacturing process. There are no special programming skills required, but a proactive attitude towards experimentation and design curiosity from all students is expected. A retrospective look at the attempts made throughout the twentieth century to industrialize construction reveals the importance taken by political and social ideals. The lecture will discuss what we can learn from the past and will try to answer this question at the intersection of history and theory.

The thrust of digital advancement in design and manufacture has changed architecture. A Digital Materiality is emerging, where the interplay between data and material can be seen as a constructive structuring of architecture. This extensive collaboration can be analytically developed and implemented on an architectural scale, leading to new forms of architectural expression and material sensuality. Against this background, the lecture will consider the hegemony of digital fabrication and the avatars of robotic manufacture in architecture. It will address the digital border crossing between the digital and the material and consider various project and contexts.

Spatial Aggregations 3
HIL F 40.9.
During this semester we will continue to explore complex spatial aggregations composed of straight rod elements. These will be assembled in orthogonal relation, using simple side-to-side connections without any extra joints. Although composed out of generic elements, the system has a capacity to build a wide range of complex configurations. As such, they lead away from conventional space-frame typologies, performing ever more complex structural capabilities.

At the disposal of today’s architect is an evolving array of interoperable tools and processes that allow the fabrication of design propositions to be increasingly complex, non-standard and adaptive. How are we equipped to deal with such a growing breadth of new potential, and how are the underlying philosophies that underpin this potential being defined? This paper attempts to address what is something of a contemporary dilemma in architecture, as the constraints of industrial standardisation are relaxed.Have the roles of designers and makers changed in a way that we’ve not experienced before, and is new approach to making architecture emerging?

The increasing integration of computational processes into the design process also increased the importance of the underlying design models. In terms of models computational design borrows heavily from computer science and engineering yet most scientific and engineering models are empirical or analytical and do not aid in the discovery of novel designs. The integration of constraints into models of design in computation remains a challenge. Developing computational models for exploration rather than confirmation of design is the focus of the research. Three design exploration examples will be discussed with a focus on steering of form in the presence of constraints.
