The Programmed Column, ETH Zurich, 2009
Elective Course
In the elective course the students were asked to program designs for columns stacked out of bricks. The focus of the course was the equilibrium condition of the structure during the buildup process without additional support and as a consequence the sequence of the brick placement. The physical equilibrium conditions were abstracted into design tools in the form of easy to use programming functions. These functions allowed to work with the requirements that the robot based fabrication of a physical column exhibits already during the digital design process.
The project was conducted in collaboration with the BLOCK Research Group - Assistant chair of Building Structure Philippe Block.
