Python ROS Bridge library allows to use Python and IronPython to interact with ROS, the open-source robotic middleware. It uses WebSockets to connect to rosbridge 2.0 and provides publishing, subscribing, service calls, actionlib, TF, and other essential ROS functionality.
Unlike the rospy library, this does not require a local ROS environment, allowing usage from platforms other than Linux.

Event-based communication infrastructure to the COMPAS framework.
Using events is a way to decouple the components of a system, making it easier to develop, test, and maintain. This allow communication between different parts of a program using messages. These messages are sent around using a publisher/subscriber model.

Oliver’s research seeks to use solid timber to achieve all main structural and building physics requirements without adhesives, metal fasteners or other artificial material layers. A core focus of the project was a standard timber element, which features deep slits sawn in the profile to improve the thermal insulation performance of the envelope. The parameters of the timber profile are investigated to allow further improvements to energy performance.

Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s film “Matter Out of Place” follows the traces of rubbish across the planet and sheds light on people's endless struggle to control the vast quantities of waste. Matter Out of Place is a film about waste in remote areas and about people who are trying to clean up. The film is capturing the dispersion of garbage and is observing the Sisyphus-like work of garbage collectors and waste managers around the world.

We are looking for a Mechanical or Robotics Engineer working on the research project Mesh Mould Prefabrication - an innovative digital design and robotic fabrication process for non-standard concrete elements, which investigates the unification of formwork and reinforcement. Your work will focus on the development and implementation of an automated fabrication process to feed, bend, cut and weld reinforcement steel to manufacture geometrically complex steel meshes. As such, you will be responsible for the mechanical and process engineering of the project, as well as support the machine design and product development. This multidisciplinary research project is conducted in collaboration with a major player in the construction industry and aims at implementing the Mesh Mould technology at an industrial scale.

The robotic pavilion built by students of the MAS DFAB 2015-16 was selected to represent ETH Zurich at the first Zurich Design Biennale opening on the 7th of September. ETH has teamed up with the Museum of Digital Art to introduce children to the playful and rational thinking behind technology and design. Throughout the weekend children can further their creative potential and cultivate their skills as makers in a series of open workshops.

Der Building-Award ist der Schweizer Preis für herausragende Ingenieurleistungen am Bau. Das Dach des neuen Gebäudes der ETH-Architekturabteilung besteht aus einer Holzkonstruktion mit 45'000 Teilen und setzt im industriellen Holzelement-Bau neue Massstäbe.
ERNE unterstützte die Planung und Entwicklung der Holzkonstruktion, welche auf dem Portalroboter der ERNE AG Holzbau in Stein produziert wurde.

Typically, structures are assembled from discrete elements, such as, for example, concrete beams or timber members. With the bespoke robotic fabrication process at hand, however, we will foster the potential of the continuous extrusion of filaments to design and fabricate spatially graded structures.

Wahlfacharbeit

|
|
Zur Vertiefung der im Wahlfach „Extruded Structures“ gemachten Untersuchungen bietet die Professur eine zusätzliche Wahlfacharbeit an. Dort wird die Erforschung robotergedruckter Leichtbaustrukturen unter besonderer Gewichtung der baulichen Umsetzung weiter geführt. Hierzu erlangen die Studierenden wichtige Fähigkeiten in der Programmierung und Umsetzung derartiger architektonischer Strukturen. Der Kurs findet in den ersten vier Wochen im Januar (05. bis 30. Januar 2015) statt und ist als Workshop (Vollzeit) organisiert. Die vorherige Teilnahme am Wahlfach wird dringend empfohlen, ist aber nicht zwingend. During this semester, the students will explore the architectural potentials of robotic extrusion of spatial meshes. Traditionally, spatial architectural structures – such as, for example, space trusses – consist of discrete elements and custom connections, and are sequentially assembled. In Extruded Structures, however, we will foster the continuous extrusion of filaments in space to fabricate complex meshes with structural properties. As such, students will learn how to generate and articulate their spatially complex designs through scripting by using simple design and fabrication rules. Physical prototypes will be produced using lightweight robotic arms with custom built ABS filament extruders. There are no special programming skills required, but a proactive attitude towards digital-material experimentation and design curiosity. This elective is offered as a double course and the ECTS points are counted accordingly.

In „Remote Material Deposition“ assembliert ein Industrieroboter architektonische Elemente aus der Entfernung. Dabei schiesst der Roboter das Baumaterial an eine bestimmte Position im Raum und baut kontinuierlich komplexe architektonische Strukturen auf. Gemeinsam mit dem Sitterwerk St.Gallen wurde hierzu eine architektonische Installation im baulichen Massstab realisiert. Diese kann - gemeinsam mit einer Vielzahl von weiteren Exponaten - in der gleichnamigen Ausstellung bis zum 11. Juli im Sitterwerk St. Gallen besichtigt werden.

Das Werfen oder Schießen von Baumaterialien ermöglicht es, zuvor unerreichbare Positionen im Raum zu treffen, und eröffnet uns damit die Möglichkeit, mit Raum jenseits unserer eigenen physischen Grenzen zu interagieren. Mit dem Forschungsprojekt "Remote Material Deposition" wollen wir die Art und Weise, wie dieses Problem seit archaischen Zeiten behandelt wird, neu denken und erkunden. Anstatt ein Gebäude mit Hilfe einer grossen Anzahl von Akteuren zu bauen, wird eine einzelne Maschine eingesetzt, die von einer Stelle aus an verschiedenen Positionen und Aufgaben gleichzeitig arbeiten kann. Während des Semesters haben die Studierenden die Möglichkeit, mit einem experimentellen Roboter-setup mit integrierter 3D-Scan-Technologie zu arbeiten, welches eine Entwurf-zu-Produktion Feedbackschleife ermöglicht. Gleichzeitig können damit die Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten des definierten Fabrikationsparadigma untersucht werden. Es sind keine speziellen Programmierkenntnisse erforderlich, aber eine pro aktive Haltung gegenüber Experimentieren und Entwurfsneugier wird von allen Studenten erwartet. Das Wahlfach wird als Doppelkurs angeboten und die ECTS-Punkte werden entsprechend angerechnet.

Während des kommenden Semesters werden wir die roboterbasierte Assemblierung von akustisch wirksamen Wänden untersuchen. Die Untersuchung wird mit einheitlichen Basiselementen begonnen, die die Studierenden mit Hilfe von kleinen Roboterarmen und einem bereits etablierten Produktionsablauf zu skalierten Wandprototypen assemblieren. Aufgrund der Vernetzung von digitalen Entwurfswerkzeugen mit der roboterbasierten Fabrikation ist es möglich, die akustischen und ästhetischen Eigenschaften der Entwürfe systematisch zu manipulieren und mit Hilfe der Prototypen auch physisch zu bewerten und zu vergleichen.
Für die Teilnahme sind Neugierde und Einsatz, aber keine speziellen Programmierkenntnisse erforderlich. Das Wahlfach wird als Doppelwahlfach angeboten und entsprechend angerechnet.

Inhalt des Kurses ist der Entwurf räumlicher Tragstrukturen aus stabförmigen Holzelementen. Wir wollen traditionelle und zeitgenössische Systeme im Holzbau neu interpretieren mithilfe digitaler Werkzeuge. Die digitale Herstellungstechnologie und die daraus entstehenden Möglichkeiten und Einschränkungen bilden die Grundlage für den Entwurf. Im Zentrum des Kurses steht die regelbasierte Beschreibung der Tragsysteme durch Programmierung und die Fertigung im Modellmaßstab durch einen robotergestützten Herstellungsprozess. Die Projekte werden in kleinen Teams bearbeitet. Für die Teilnahme sind Neugierde und Einsatz, aber keine speziellen Programmierkenntnisse erforderlich. Im digitalen Zeitalter hat sich die Architektur radikal verändert. Dies zeigt sich in unterschiedlichsten Erscheinungsformen, doch eines steht fest: Indem das Zusammenspiel von digitalen Daten und materieller Umsetzung an Intensität gewinnt, entsteht eine „Digitale Materialität“, welche als konstruktiv bedingter und somit wesentlicher Ausdruck der Architektur im digitalen Zeitalter interpretiert werden kann. Dieser Umbruch kann nicht nur analytisch untersucht und in einem architektonischen Massstab umgesetzt werden. Vielmehr führt dieser zu neuen Selbstverständlichkeiten und Entscheidungsabläufen, sodass sich nicht nur der materielle Ausdruck der Architektur massgeblich verändert, sondern ebenso die Rolle des Autors. Daher wird sich der Vortrag auf grundsätzliche Weise mit den Implikationen der digitalen Fabrikation und roboterbasierter Fertigung in der Architektur auseinandersetzen, um zugleich die in Anschlag gebrachte Synthese aus digitaler und materieller Realität anhand einer Vielzahl von Projekten und Kontexten zu diskutieren.

In diesem Semester setzt die Professur für Architektur und Digitale Fabrikation die Untersuchung komplexer räumlicher Tragwerke fort und beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der roboterbasierten Assemblierung linearer Stabelemente. Obwohl die zu untersuchenden Systeme aus einer Vielzahl generischer Elemente zusammengesetzt sind und einfache Verbindungstechniken verwendet werden, ermöglichen diese eine grosse Anzahl komplexer Konfigurationen. Aufgrund der additiven Assemblierung einer Vielzahl von Stabelementen werden differenzierte und hochredundante Tragsysteme ermöglicht, die es erlauben, neue Entwurfs- und Baumethoden für komplexen Stabtragwerke gezielt zu untersuchen.

Tatsächlich ist heute, an der Schwelle vom mechanischen zum digitalen Zeitalter die Debatte über die Produktionsbedingungen in der Architektur neu entbrannt. Dies wirft zugleich die Frage auf, welche Voraussetzung für den Umgang mit diesen technologischen Potenzialen geschaffen werden müssen, und demgegenüber, welche grundsätzlichen theoretischen Positionen hierfür in Anspruch zu nehmen sind. Der Vortrag von Bob Sheil wird sich daher zentral mit der Entwertung traditioneller, mechanischer Paradigmen befassen und zugleich die noch immer nicht abschliessend geklärten Auswirkungen und Verschiebungen dieses «Paradigmenwandels» diskutieren.

Unter dem Einfluss digitaler Technologien treten computerbasierte Verfahren in eine neue Wechselbeziehung zum architektonischen Entwurf. Interessanterweise lassen sich jene aufgrund ihrer empirischen und analytischen Ausrichtung jedoch nur unzureichend für die Entwicklung neuartiger Architekturformen einsetzen, sodass konstatiert werden muss, dass gerade hierin sich eine wesentliche Herausforderung abzeichnet. Gerade hier setzt Axel Kilians Vortrag an. Diskutiert werden drei unterschiedliche Ansätze, die den Schwerpunkt auf digital errechnete Entwurfsmodelle in Abhängigkeit jeweils unterschiedlicher Einflüsse und Einwirkungen setzen.

Robert Stuart Smith wird in seinem Vortrag auf die Architekturpraxis von Kokkugia eingehen und seine Untersuchung agentenbasierter, selbstorganisierender Entwurfssysteme sowohl am AADRL an der Architectural Association in London als auch an der Washington University diskutieren. Hierin bildet die Auseinandersetzung mit räumlichen, formalen, ornamentalen und strukturalen Qualitäten einen zentralen Teil und schafft ein vielfach erweitertes Potenzial in der Operationalität des architektonischen Entwurfs und dessen Materialisierung.

Spätestens seit den 1990er Jahren ist der zunehmende Einfluss digitaler Technologien auf die Architektur unbestritten. Doch keinesfalls abschliessend geklärt ist, welche Auswirkungen diese Entwicklung auf die Architektur tatsächlich hat, eine Disziplin, die wie keine andere für Materialität, Konstruktion und Präsenz steht. Die Vorlesung hat zum Ziel, die zunehmende Auflösung dieser Grenzen sowie die Vorherrschaft algorithmischen Denkens in der Architektur zu diskutieren und dabei gezielt auf zeitgenössische digitale Fabrikationstechniken einzugehen.

Genau 100 Jahre nach der Publikation von Adolf Loos’ Ornament und Verbrechen, ein Manifest dem es tatsächlich gelang, das Ornament an den Rand des Architekturdiskurses zu verbannen, unternimmt die Ausstellung einen Schritt, um dem Wiederaufleben des Ornaments in der zeitgenössischen Architektur nachzuspüren.

Gramazio & Kohler sind Teil der Ausstellung "Ornament neu aufgelegt" am Schweizer Architektur Museum in Basel. Genau 100 Jahre nach der Publikation von Adolf Loos’ Ornament und Verbrechen, ein Manifest dem es tatsächlich gelang, das Ornament an den Rand des Architekturdiskurses zu verbannen, unternimmt die Ausstellung einen Schritt, um dem Wiederaufleben des Ornaments in der zeitgenössischen Architektur nachzuspüren.
