Elective Thesis
|
Following the elective course, the four-week workshop "Graded Structures" offered the students an opportunity to deepen the themes from the semester. The students continued to explore the potentials of the robotic process at hand, investigating the continuous spatial extrusion of polymer filaments to design spatially graded structures. They followed by designing, programming and building a hanging canopy structure with a size of 2 x 3.7m consisting of three partially interlocking elements. The constraints given by the robotic fabrication process such as the sequence of the extrusion, the design of the custom joints as well as the lengths and angles of the edges of the structure were integrated in an early phase of the design development and became an integral part of the architectural design.
