Robotic Clay Molding, Barcelona, Spain, 2012

State of the art technology in the field of non-standard concrete formwork is largely based on subtractive and waste intensive fabrication methods. These methods prove very efficient for a large scale production of identical parts. An efficient and sustainable fabrication of individual parts demands for the development of new formwork strategies. This workshop researched the use of clay as a reusable molding material to fabricate unique building elements in concrete with a minimum of waste resulting from the formwork.
Within a 4 day workshop the students developed physical and digital tools to manipulate the molding material using an industrial robotic arm. Through custom scripts provided by the DFB team the students were able to directly export robotic code from the CAD environment. Specific material properties of the clay, tool configurations and robotic movement strategies had to be harmonized within a coherent design strategy. An iterative loop of manual experimentation, coding and digital fabrication enriched the design process and helped the students to bridge the gap between their digital design concepts and the resulting physical artifacts.
The students fabricated clay molds and subsequently cast concrete panels to verify and evaluate their design strategies in 1:1 scale.
