Hannes Mayer is Senior Researcher and member of the board of Gramazio Kohler Research. He is the director of education and oversees all research, publication and exhibition projects at the chair.

Prior to joining GKR Hannes Mayer was the Roland Rainer Chair 2014/15 – Professor for Architectural Design and Research at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and taught design studios and postgraduate design research at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London as well as University of Westminster, London. In Parallel, he was the director and editor-in-chief of the thematic review for architecture archithese until 2014. In 2016 he was an artist in residence at Villa Kamogawa, Goethe Institut Kyoto.

Hannes Mayer is a frequent lecturer and visiting critic and a prolific initiator as well as experienced chair of public events. His more than sixty articles on architecture and related fields have been published in AD, arch+, archithese, a+u, Baumeister, trans, werk,bauen+wohnen as well as in various edited books.

Hannes Mayer holds a diploma and master in architecture degree from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, having previously studied at TU Eindhoven and BTU Cottbus. He worked for Meili Peter Architekten in Zurich and Glowacka Rennie Architects in London and on the construction site of Renzo Piano´s Paul Klee Zentrum in Berne. Since 2007 he has pursued his own projects, setting up united circus in 2015. With works ranging from a documentary film and exhibition on homelessness to post-digital architectural design using image-based vector fields (Lichonic Architecture), his projects have been shown at Ars Electronica Center Linz, Kunsthaus Graz, Schauspielhaus Graz, HDA Graz, Architekturzentrum Wien, Architekturforum Zurich, Austrian Pavilion – Venice Biennale, Fundación Arquitectura COAM Madrid, Spitalfields Church London, Obai-in Temple Kyoto and as part of the Art Festival Steirischer Herbst. More recently, he organized a series of conferences on the state of Swiss architecture, was shortlisted for the Swiss Art Award and developed public formats which intensify architectural debate through means of sound and media. This work culminated in his lecture series the accelerating expanding universe of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He is co-publisher of the architecture magazine manege für architektur.
