Installation at the SEC FCL exhibition “Research, Outcomes and Prospects“

The installation at the SEC Future Cities Laboratory Exhibition “Research, Outcomes and Prospects“ is a continuation of a design that was developed in the Design Research Studio “Design of Robotic Fabricated High Rises”. The overall intention is to create a multitude of unique interior spatial configurations by algorithmically controlling a large number of generic elements. As such, the overall high-rise structure is conceived as linked tectonic strands that branch and merge into an undulating overall shape. The project, showcased in the ETH Zurich main building, is realised through a custom robotic fabrication setup at the scale of 1:50. The gripper picks a paper stripe, cuts it at a predefined distance, folds it in to the desired angle and then places it on the installation. The final piece consists of 3,643 of these elements. In total 37.8 kg of Bristol paper and 2.5 l of wood glue were used.
The Installation is on display until 9th November 2014 in the ETH Zurich main building.
