Material Acts: A Symposium
Craft Contemporary. Los Angeles, USA. Lecturer: Matthias Kohler. |
Material Acts: A Symposium brings together artists, designers, and architects experimenting with material processes and systems. Understanding materials as process-based events with human actors, rather than artifacts found in stasis, this symposium on new materials explores the rich milieu of ideas that accompany their making, including practices in bioregional design, waste economies, and living systems, alongside perspectives of care, constraint, and regeneration.

COMPAS XR is an open-source tool dedicated to exploring the innovative intersections of eXtended Reality (XR) technologies within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sectors. Developed within the Compas framework, COMPAS XR aims to transform the construction industry by providing a streamlined approach to integrating immersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), into AEC workflows. This integration enables enhanced visualization, human-machine collaboration, and decision-making processes, ultimately leading to increased efficiency, reduced errors, and improved project outcomes. Please RSVP by clicking on the image on the left.

ICD Research Talk(s) – Timber Architecture. Please pre-register by clicking on the image. Lecturer: Oliver Bucklin, Luis Orozco. |
Oliver’s research seeks to use solid timber to achieve all main structural and building physics requirements without adhesives, metal fasteners or other artificial material layers. A core focus of the project was a standard timber element, which features deep slits sawn in the profile to improve the thermal insulation performance of the envelope. The parameters of the timber profile are investigated to allow further improvements to energy performance.

Robots are our partners in the future. This exhibition showcases a collection of design activities and experiments by students at San José State University, as they test the creative possibilities of collaborating with a robot. Together with faculty and guest design collaborators Jonathon Anderson, Madeline Gannon, Andrew Kudless, and Gramazio Kohler Research, experiments shown in the exhibition engage the robot across multiple disciplines and media: calligraphy, photography, 3D-light painting, 3D-printing, and stop-motion animation.

COMPAS FAB: Robotic fabrication package for the COMPAS Framework
Robotic fabrication package for the COMPAS Framework facilitating the planning and execution of robotic fabrication processes. It provides interfaces to existing software libraries and tools available in the field of robotics (e.g. OMPL, ROS) and makes them accessible from within the parametric design environment. The package builds upon COMPAS, an open-source Python-based framework for collaboration and research in architecture, engineering and digital fabrication.
