The Sequential Roof, Zurich, 2010-2015
Digital assembly of a complex roof structure
The future “Arch-Tec-Lab“ of the Insitute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) will be covered by a wooden roof structure, developed and planned at the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication. The structure consists of more than 45.000 individual timber elements – woven into a complex, free form roof design. The project demonstrates the potential of combining digital fabrication technology with wood as a local and sustainable building material. In collaboration with experts from academia and practice, the Chair's research results in the field of digital timber construction are being condensed and applied at full architectural scale. An integrated digital planning process connects design, structural analysis and the generation of fabrication data. Based on this data, an automated assembly and gluing process of the wooden slats to individually formed trussed beams allows an efficient fabrication of the free form roof geometry.
